Brief Description:  Oil Sump Construction

The oil sump halves were sanded and prepared for gluing. The assembly of the oil sump was frustrating. Initially the two halves were put together with fiberglass mesh and resin, but trying to clamp the parts together without them slipping was extremely difficult to say the least. The parts were disassembled and cleaned with acetone. A wooden jig was made to hold the shallow half of the oil sump in place (see image 1). Notches were created to that a clamp could be attached at four spots around the sump after the deeper half was put in place with fiberglass mesh and resin (see image2). Once the halves were temporarily secured, the parts were removed from the jig and additional clamps were installed with metal strips on the edges of the sump to evenly distribute the clamping force (see image 3). The sump will be allowed to set for a day before removing clamps.
