Brief Description:  Wing Rigging

The wings were ready to be reinstalled after trimming the wing aft spar to clear the AN470 rivet on the fuselage. I had my son Reino help me install each wing and I reinstalled the 4 pins to secure each wing to the fuselage. I placed the 4 plumb bobs back over the leading edge and then trianglulated the wings to the tail as I had done previously. I moved each wing slightly fore or aft until I had an identical reading of 16' 5/8". I adjusted the plumb line so that the outer plumb bobs were directly over the line. The inner plumb bobs were 1/16" forward of the line and within tolerances as called for in the plans. DWG 38 calls for a 3" spacer to be placed over the wing rear spar and a level from that point to the forward web of the main wing spar. I cut a piece of 3/4" pine to 3" width and screwed another piece to it to form a right angle. I marked my 4 foot level and clamped the spacer to the level. I marked the wing aft spar location and positioned the level on the wing. I used my digital Smart Level and checked the fuselage for level on the top longeron and the wing spar center section. Both were level. I placed the digital level on the 4' level and had a reading of -0.1 degrees. I moved the aft spar done slightly until I had a reading of zero. I clamped the aft wing spar to the fuselage spar attachment. I repeated the process for the right wing. I went back and checked the triangulation and the plumb bobs. After several small adjustments, I had both wings incidence and sweep dialed in. Next is the critical steo of drilling the 5/16" hole for the AN5 bolt that would lock the wing sweep and incidence in place. I decided to make my own drill guide from a piece of steel 1" thick and 1 1/2" square.
