I decided today was the day to dust off the long-forgotten rudder and start the installation process. First I mounted the vertical tail horn at the bottom of the rudder. Next I carefully started the trimming process on the leading edge skin where it has to allow for movement of the horizontal stabilizer (and horn) as well as clear the fiberglass saddle. I trimmed as much as I dared before the next step, which was locating and mounting the upper bearing. They have to intersect with the upper rudder hinge, so I measured about five times before drilling. Everything came out fine. Once that was primed and riveted, I was able to stand back and see my airplane with its tail feathers for the first time. Very gratifying. I have more trimming to do and some slight reaming out of holes to perfect the alignments of bolts and bushings, but I'm 90% there. No more updates until after Christmas.
