Brief Description:  1 - Oil & filter changed and distributor set

The last time my engine had full oil was when it was run at Corvair College 13 on 10/3/2010. It has had a coating of oil on all the internal parts, but it was time to drain any remaining oil from the system and start fresh. I also took this opportunity to drill the oil drain plug for safety wire. That is easier said than done, as the head is very hard steel. The hole isn't pretty, but I did get through. After draining the oil, I installed and safety wired the oil filter and drain plug. Then I added 4 quarts of oil to the system and removed the distributor so I could pre-oil the system using the oil pump tang at the bottom of the distributor shaft hole. Because I didn't have a junk distributor, I broke the handle off of a long screwdriver and chucked that in my drill. I probably pre-oiled for about 20 minutes, turning the prop every minute. After the oil had settled down, I marked my dipstick for 4 quarts (one quart low). Then I added the last quart, pre-oiled again for 5 minutes and marked the "full oil" mark on my dipstick. Next I followed William Wynne's instructions for setting the TDC mark on the balancer to the 8 degree mark on the case. From there it was just a matter of positioning the distributor and rotor so they would slide into place in the correct location and orientation. The final step was to turn the distributor body until the points opened up, at which point you lock it down. I also marked the harmonic balancer for 32 degrees BTDC for timing purposes at 2,700 RPM. If all went well, it should fire up quickly the next time I apply fuel and power. My final check of the day was to be sure that the correct ignition wires went to the right cylinders. I'm satisfied that the oil system and timing/ignition wires are correct.
