Brief Description:  Practice dimpling

Didn't do any actual contruction today, but I've been researching and practicing dimpling details and "skins". Actually practiced/experimented a couple days ago as well, but didn't document.

I got a dimpler from Sonex, but the nail that is used to pull the two halves of the dimpler together is too large to fit through a #40 hole. I stopped by a hardware store on the way home from work and bought some smaller nails, but they were way to smal.

After re-researching, I saw that other builders have used a 6d nail. The one that Sonex provided appears to be an 8d according to my calipers.

As it turns out, there are several types of 6d nails (also called 6 penny because that's how much a pound of them cost somewhere long ago). There are Box, Common, and a few others. It turns out that a 6d Box has the diameter I need.

So the plan is to dimple the skins starting right at the #40 pilot hole. Then I'll cleco the parts together, and updrill to #30. Though I might consider updrilling to 1/8" because I've read that if the hole is too large the stem of the rivet will protrude. The stem is able to travel too much before breaking. I've noticed this on a couple of the practice rivets I've done.
