Brief Description:  Attach Plate and Splice Plate

The past couple days I've finished riveting the turtle deck. I've also riveted the turtle deck attach plates, and splices.

Unfortunately, some of laser cut holes weren't in the correct place, which caused interference between the attach and splice plates. On top of that, after I finally modified the forward attach plate so it would fit, and riveted it in place, I discovered that the upper side splice plates would no longer fit. This is because the box cross tie wasn’t cut correctly. I knew there was an issue, so I had modified it before I riveted it in place, but I foolishly did not double check the fit before I riveted it in place. I should have removed an additional 1/16” of material. This caused me to have to painstakingly file, sand, and grind the box cross tie, and splice plates.

Actually the splice plates were easy to modify, as I could remove them from the fuselage. It was the box cross tie that was riveted in place with about 30 rivets, and 4 bolts that I didn’t want to have to remove. In hindsight it might have been easier to remove the box cross tie, so I could easily remove the 1/16 “ of material that I needed to remove.

What a pain! It should have only taken 1/2 hour to do this, and ended up taking 4 hours!

Being one of the first people to get the laser cut match hole kit may not have been such a good thing. Yes, it's saving me time, but I've had several parts with laser cut holes in slightly the wrong place. This has caused me to have to add spacers, additional holes, and custom modifications. I guess for every 4 hours I've saved, I've lost 1 hour due laser cut parts being made incorrectly.
Sonex tech support is getting to know me :-)
