Brief Description:  Practicing Tight Fit Bolt Hole Drilling

Recieved some new drill bits, so I thought I'd practice drilling the tight fit bolt holes for the wing attach blocks. Of course I used some "scrap" metal to do this.

After spending over an hour adjusting my drill press (very fine grinding of fittings) so the quill would be absolutely perpendicular to the block, I got started.

First I drilled a 3/16" hole, then updrilled to 15/64". I then slightly dulled the end of a size "D" drill bit, and updrilled again.

To my surprise, the hole ended up being just about perfect. Unfortunately, I decided to dull the entire lenth of the bit some more thinking that maybe I could make it a little tighter. What a mistake! I ruined a perfectly good size "D" drill bit. The second hold I drilled was too small to get the threads of the bold in.

This mistake cost me $26 because I decided to just just buy a 0.2470" reamer, and another "D" bit. I won't have them for a few days though, so I'll just have to cross my fingers.
