Brief Description: Right Wing - Skins
|
|
Today I had planned on getting the top skins riveted onto the right wing skeleton. Right after I got the top skins clecoed on, I noticed that I hadn't installed the nutplates for the wing root fairing. I wanted to do this before riveting the skins so I could dimple them rather than countersink. On the top side, I drilled the seven screw holes out to #19, removed the skins, and deburred and dimpled the screw holes. I then re-clecoed the wing walk doubler, clecoed nutplates in place, and back-drilled through the nut plate rivet holes. After deburring, I re-clecoed the wing walk doubler and countersunk the nutplate rivet holes for NAS1097-3 rivets. After re-priming the skin, doubler, and rib, I riveted the nutplates in place.
I kind of hurried through this process, as I was expecting help from my riveting buddy. There must have been some miscommunicaton between him and me, as I had understood he was going to drop by after flying his RV-7, but he didn't show. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers...
To get some good out of the day, I went ahead and prepped the bottom side of the root rib and skin for its ten nutplates. I pretty much followed the same process as for the top, except that there is no doubler, so I countersunk the skin instead. Of course I'll wait until riveting the bottom skins to install these nutplates.
I had forgotten to torque the tiedown bar in place before riveting the leading edge yesterday, so I went ahead and took care of that. It turned out to be easier than I expected. I also installed seven of the rivets through the outboard top skin and main spar in the bellcrank bay, as access to them will be limited if I get around to installing the bellcrank brackets before my bucking partner comes by to help.
