Brief Description:  Repaired Transponder Harness

Reviewed the ELT antenna locations again. Found that the antenna would fit beside the seat and the cockpit wall. It would still require the fabrication of a ground plane and mounting to the floor under the seat. A little more investigation may be needed.

Removed the transponder from its case. Removed the two screws holding the main plug into the back of the case. Tilted the plug on edge and removed it from the case. Cut the ties holding the harness in place and brought the plug on top of the case. Moved the broken terminal from the plug. Striped 3/16 inch of installation from the broken wire. Mounted a new terminal on the wire and checked the connection for a good crimp. Found that one side was not folded over the wire. Repositioned the terminal in the crimping pliers and set the crimp a second time. Completed a good crimp. Inserted the terminal back into the plug. Installed the plug back into the case and reinstalled the transponder. Powered up the transponder and checked the displays. The altimeter reading were displayed correctly. Noted that the power for the transponder was not going through the avionics switch. Found that I had wired the power directly to the main power buss. Removed the transponder power lead from the main power buss. Removed the transponder circuit breaker from the instrument panel and removed the short power lead. Crimped a terminal onto a length of 18 gauge red wire and ran it from the avionics buss to the transponder circuit breaker. Printed three wire labels and inserted them onto the transponder power lead. Final connections to be completed during the next work day.
