Brief Description:  Installation of Rudder Cables

Installed the rudder on to the rudder post. Laided out the left rudder cable through the fuselage. Marked the route for the control cable and the positions for the guide grommets on the fuselage frame F38. Cut two 5/8 inch lengths of 3/4 inch ID steel pipe and sanded the ends to smooth the edges to form the grommets. Clamped a grommet at the marked location and tig welded it in place. Repeated the process for the second grommet. Slid a copper Nicro press sleeve on the 3/32 inch control cable and run it through the thimble and back through the sleeve. Crimped the sleeve two times using the 3/32 inch crimp position on the hand vice. Connected the cable to the left control arm of the rudder using a small clevis. Extended the control cable through the frame grommet to the rudder bar turnbuckle and marked 8 inches beyond. Cut the cable using a chisel and steel block at the marked location. Placed a press sleeve on the cable and then ran the cable through the thimble and turnbuckle end then back into the sleeve. Put two crimps in the sleeve. Using a steel sheet protector on the cables, cut the loose end next to the sleeves with a Dremel tool and cut off wheel. Applied a third crimp to each sleeve next to the cutoff end to complete the cable.

Repeated the cable installation for the right rudder cable as described above. Installed the plastic inserts into each of the grommets to protect the control cables securing each insert with a spring steel snap ring.

Connected a turnbuckle in the far right and left sides of the rudder bar. Connected the cable to the turnbuckle and tensioned the cable. The alignment between the turnbuckle and rudder bar attachment point was an issue which will require swapping ends on each of the control cables.
