Brief Description:  Transponder Opening on Instrument Panel

Cut four 5/8 by 2 1/2 inch strips from a piece of 0.35 scrap aluminum. Sanded all edges of the strips smooth and rounded the corners. Bent 1/2 inch of each strip end at 90 degrees to form a L shaped bracket. Center punched the short arm of the L and drilled a 1/8 inch hole. Clipped each corner of the short arm and sanded the segment into a oval tab. Each of these brackets will serve to mount the landing lights within the wing stub.

Laid the instrument panel face down on the work table. Using the transponder case, marked its outline on the back of the instrument panel in the location for the opening. Used the dremel tool with a diamond cutoff blade cut the outline from the instrument panel. Tested fitted the transponder case to the opening and checked the fit. The opening was not big enough to accept the case. Carefully fitted the case in the opening and marked the outline on the outside of the case where the overhand occurred. Used the dremel tool again to remove the additional material from the panel. Tested the fit again and found it complete.
