Brief Description:  rivet front floors, install gear mounts

Thr rivets in the left floor are complete. Other than tired hands (hand squeezer for two hours) there was no issue.

On to the gear mounts. After cutting the spacer tubes, all of the bolts went in and were torqued. Those at the bottom of the spar were a little difficult to ge in place. Nothing a little ingenuity couldn't take care of. I set the washers on the end of a magnetic pick up tool and pulled them into place. The nuts were held in a long set of pliers while I spun the bolt slowly. They all went on easy and everything lined up almost perfectly.

Next up the step mounts. I set up the mill to drill the mounting blocks per the plans. I had to sand the holes in the skin a small amount to slip the steps in place. I clecoed the baggage floor towards the front and drilled the blocks one hole, then bolt, then the next hole etc. Remove, deburr, bolt, torque, torque seal .... done

For alignment of the step, I don't like the way vans dimensioned. Drawing an extended line up the side of the fuselage from the back of the step, proper alignment intersects the eighth rivet up the rib. (Easier than the method in the plans) To check the alignment method, I then went back and leveled the rear face of the spar (to vertical), set a straight edge vertical against the step and measured per the plans. About 1/8" too far forward, not enough to really notice. I corrected the position and then rechecked until I was absolutly sure the position was correct. Now the truly easy method, taking a RADIAL measurement from the bottom rear edge of the spar to the front edge of the step, gives a no muss, no fuss measurement to the front of the step of 45 1/2". Sooo much easier than messing with leveling the spar etc..

In the next few days I will turn a pair of anti-crush inserts on the lathe and final drill the steps for position. I also plan to add access panels for any future maintainance as well as wire run access etc..
