I have a partiallly completed GP-4 in the shop. The GP-4 was started at a time in life when the likelyhood of more than one passenger was very low. Life circumstances change, and in my case, the change means a different airplane will take priority. The RV-10 is the right airplane for the intended use.
I have a 1500 sq. ft. shop with a full compliment of wood working and metal tools. In wood I have a saw mill and drying shed. So I take lumber all the way from tree to finished cabinets. In metal I have a mill, lathe, multiple welders (Gas, MIG, TIG, Spot) etc.. Everything needed to build two long travel mini buggies from scratch. (See pics below)
I am still trying to decide what I want this build log to be. First and foremost, documentation of the build to meet FAA requirements. However, many of the build logs of those gone before me have helped me understand the process, commitmet, vendors t, tools etc. required for a successful build. So there is the question, do I document only for the FAA, or do I try to leave something of value to furure builders assuming I post this log?
Edit: It looks like I will provide my thoughts and learnings on the build process as well as the simple progress. I have done a great deal of wood work, metal fabrication, machining and welding with some fairly substantial projects completed. This is my first time working with aluminum and structures this light.
My methodology is to read, experiment and push forward learning as I go. So to anybody reading this, I have many skills, but do not have any experience/skill with light weight aluminum structures. I am acustomed to working with steel. So this will be interesting
I am generally considered a good craftsman, but always see ways I could improve the second (etc.) time around. I always try to make the perfect cut, perfect joint, perfect project, but recognize it doesn't always come out that way on the first go. With only one set of parts in the kit, perfection is not attainable without purchasing a lot of extra parts. I will
