Brief Description: Spring (Main) Gear Test Mount
Started out the day by grinding a notch into the spring gear to accept the upper-aft bolt for the left brake assembly (as I previously done on the right brake assembly).
Next, after having thought about this for weeks, I finally came up with an idea for mounting the spring gear. The spring gear is a 7-foot-wide, 45 pound hunk of aluminum that requires 4 carefully placed notches in it to accommodate the 4 gear mount bolts already attached to the fuselage. This piece is unwieldy for two people and since I pretty much run solo in my building, this was a challenge I'd been mulling over for a while. I needed the ability to move (roll), rotate, and raise/lower the gear while keeping at least one hand free and I was having a hard time imagining such a device without sending a wad of cash on it. Today I realized the answer was underneath me he whole time: My trusty work bench stool!
So I made a wood platform out of 2 x 4 scraps scavanged from various Zenith shipping crates, and placed it on the chair, then added the spring gear to the top of the platform. From that point is was almost a 1-finger effort to maneuver the spring gear around the garage and raise/lower it using the hydralic seat height adjustment on the chair. One hour later, after some serious notch grinding, I had the gear custom fitted to the gear mounts and temporaily mounted using the reast of the mounting hardware.
