Brief Description:  Center Console Begin

Began installation of the center console which performs 3 primary functions. First, it connects the instrument panel to the top of the wing spar frame which provides rigidity to the instrument panel. Next, it serves as the location for the easily accessed fuel selector knob and a few other convenience items (like maybe my headphone jacks). Lastly, the sides of the console provide protection for items running through the central tunnel of the spar frame like rudder cables, fuel lines, brake lines and some electrical lines.

Today I began by taking the center console face, which begins as a simple 330mm channel, and cut and trimmed the side flanges at either end. Next, I put two bends into the channel - one about 1/3 up from the bottom and one at the very top. The upper bend matches the top of the console face with the lower flange of the instrument panel for eventual riveting together. The lower bend extends the console face away from the seat a bit before turning more vertically to meet the instrument panel.

Once clamped into place, I fabricated 2 L-Angles from .040 aluminum to connect the base of the instrument panel to the firewall cross stiffener adding additional rigidity to the instrument panel.
