Brief Description: Tip Ribs and Hinge
|
|
Went back downstairs for a bit before the Superbowl started to take care of a couple more tasks on the stabilizer: Tip ribs and elevator hinge.
The tip ribs were a bear until I realized that Zenith's pre-drilled tip ribs, although described as "symmetric" in the Photo Assembly Guide, actually are not. Based on alignment with the pre-drilled skin, alignment with the "L" brackets which help hold the tip rib and a cutout notch in the outboard, rear, lower corner of the flange (this is the hint that finally convinced me), I came to realize that sides do matter! Once I figured that out and I stopped trying to fit the ribs in the wrong sides, it all went together fine.
Next was the elevator hinge. With the skin pre-drilled with pilot holes and already perfectly flush with the rear spar aft flange (no trimming required), it was a simple matter of measuring the middle of the hinge, matching it with the aircraft centerline, clamping, drilling, and cleco fastening. A quick and efficient job.
Tomorrow morning: Disassemble, debur, rivet.

Tip rib cleco fastened in place. This would be the RIGHT rib.

The elevator hinge drilled and clecoed.
