Brief Description:  Forward Top Skin Finish

Working at home finished the forward top skin. The forward top skin covers the avionics bay forward of the instrument panel. It is a unique part in that part of it is inside the cockpit while the other part is outside. For this session, I wanted to focus on the interior portion, but I also worked on the ouside too.

For the interior, I used a leather-grained adhesive vinyl product used on automobile dashboards and an automobile edging product that clamps over the sharp edge above the instrument panel. To determine the size and shape of the vinyl, I had traced the shape of the canopy where it rests on the forward top skin. From there I created a template which I used to cut the vinyl. Before applying the vinyl, I polished the forward top skin using the first two stages of Nuvite metal polish (G and C grades) and cleaned the surface with rubbing alcohol and Krud Cutter. Application of the vinyl was straightforward once I began using a credit card as a squeegee. Afterward, I applied the Trim-Lok edge trim which, while somewhat difficult to push over the edge of the skin, locked firmly into place without requiring adhesives.
