Brief Description:  Right Flap Installed

Installed the right flap today. This was basically a 3-part task.

First, I test fit the flap to make sure it fit with no interference. The flap was built in March 2013 and was fit to the wing in the fall of 2013 when the hinge was installed. The flap was removed during wing storage in the ensuing years by removing the pin from the piano hinge. Consequently, today was the first fit of the flap to an installed wing and flap drive system. The fit was near perfect, but required a small extension to the slot the flap control tube arm pin runs along. This also required fabrication of a new flap control plate, a nylon fairlead-like material that protects the tube arm pin from wear, to the longer length.

Next, I attached the new flap control plate to the inboard rib of the right flap.

Lastly, I reinstalled the piano hinge pin by waxing the nearly 7-foot pin to lube it, chucking it into my drill bit, then feeding it through the two hinge pieces (flap and wing) by rotating the pin while pushing it in gently. This works like a champ!

The flap is clear of the fuselage by 5-mm, ~3mm from the fuselage step plate, and precisely 5mm from the aileron - Not bad for assembling something 3 years after it was built!

Lastly I'll need to safety wire the pin into the hinge and drill out the right side flap torque tube to lock the flap retraction/extension positions in place.
