Brief Description:  GPS Antenna Mount Bracing

I decided a couple weeks ago that the GPS mount I fabricated isn't stable enough. While the mount is plenty strong (somewhat over-engineered), it's single contact point at the top of the upper firewall stiffener wasn't sufficient to keep it from vibrating. While step-drilling a firewall pass-thru hole, I noticed the front edge of the mount was vibrating up-and-down close to a half inch in each direction. I didn't think this was particularly good for the combination gps and antenna and figured it might be just as bad with the engine running.

So today I figured out a way to add two angle braces to the assembly that attached to the bottom of the upper firewall stiffener and the side flanges of the GPS mount near the front. I took some .040" L-angle, did some measuring, some cutting, and some bending to produce a custom brace for each side of the GPS mount. The two braces will bolt on near the bottom of the upper firewall stiffener and will be riveted to the GPS mount. Even with just the clecoes holding the braces in place, all movement at the forward edge of the mount is eliminated.

I stopped work today after painting the two braces and will install them tomorrow.
