Brief Description:  Forward Canopy Frame Fitting

Continuing to prepare the canopy frame for fitting the canopy bubble, this morning I pre-drilled the aft rear canopy frame. This involved drilling the gusset that attaches the aft frame to the upper longeron. Previously, I had riveted the front part of the gusset to the longeron, but left the aft portion (the part that connects to the frame) taped so that I could fit the forward rear frame first. After fitting and drilling the rear canopy gusset I drew out and drilled the rivet line for connecting the canopy bubble to the rear frame.

Next, I fit the forward canopy frame. The forward frame reinforces the canopy around the instrument panel and connects to the canopy side frames via gussets. Fitting the forward frame involved trimming the ends of the frame at a sharp angle so the frame and gusset fit flush against the side frames. I then employed my 2-blocks-of-wood canopy frame bender to shape the forward frame so that it lays flat on both side frames without any tension on it.

Lastly, I established all the corners of the canopy bubble in accordance with the photo assembly guides. Then I measured the centerline of the bubble. From there I measured out the first recommended cut which is to trim the aft end of the bubble as shown in image 3.
