Brief Description:  Nosewheel Steering Linkages

Now that the plane is on wheels and I can sit in it, I decided to fit my rudder pedals by adjusting the length of the nosewheel steering rods. The steering rods are two pieces of 5/16" steel rod that attach to the rudder pedals on the inside of the airplane, pass through the firewall and attach to the lower cross pipe on the nosegear (the cross pipes rest on the lower nosegear bearing). The rudder pedals are staggered so the rods are different lengths, plus I installed them forward about 15mm to help with my 6' 2" frame.

I hopped in the cockpit, got myself comfortable, then rotated the rudder pedals fore and aft until they "felt right." I hopped back out (careful to not move the pedals) and checked the position of the two steering rods compared to their attach points. The right rudder pedal (also the steering rod in the right side of each picture - don't ask ... it's complicated) was close enough, but the left one was 25 mm too far forward.

So I cut off the excess rod length, which also happened to be all of the threaded area on the rod (used to attach a rod end that attaches to the nosegear). So I got out my trusty 5/16", 28 threads-per-inch die which I just happened to have (since I'd already anticipated needing to do this) and re-threaded the rod end. With both rods the appropriate lengths, I went ahead and finished their installation.
