Brief Description:  Begin Rear Side Skins

With a little help from Shannon, I brought the two rear side skins up from the basement to begin work on them. Yes, it's still in the high twenties/low thirties around here - I think I'm starting to get used to the cold.

Step one was to fabricate 7 vertical braces for each side skin to give the skin rigidity. This was done by clamping the top rear longeron onto each side skin then measuring the L-angles to butt up against the longeron on the top, and to overlap the lower longeron on the bottom. Other than a lot of measuring, drilling, and trimming, this was a straightforward job.

With both skins outfitted with their vertical braces, I attached three wooden vertical supports to the side of the bench to help support the side skin, then slid the side skin vertical braces over the bottom skin longerons. After ensuring fore/aft alignment with the horizontal tail frame (which is on the bottom skin structure), I clamped the side skin to the two horizontal tail frame pieces.

Next up: drilling out the lower longerons and horizontal tail frames.
