Brief Description:  Right Wing Stiffeners and Bellcrank Bracing

Today I began by fitting and drilling out the spanwise stiffeners to the bottom skin. These are the L-angles attached to the inside of the wing that run along the 50% chord line to reduce wing skin vibration/oil canning. There are 5 in all, one each between ribs 5 through 9. The one that would normally fit between ribs 4 & 5 is replaced by the rear wall of the wing locker.

After finishing the spanwise stiffeners, I fitted and drilled out the two aileron bellcrank braces. These braces run along the inside of the skin like the spanwise stiffeners, but also attach to the front and rear flanges of the bellcrank channel on rib #7 and the flange of rib #6. All told, these two braces (and the two like them that will go on the top skin) add significant rigidity to the bellcrank assembly.

Afterward, I removed the bottom skin, stacked it under the wing skeleton with the top skin (under layers of cardboard) and updrilled the skeleton to final rivet size (A5 or 5/32). Disassembled the skeleton and deburred all the skeleton-specific rivet holes, sanded all the edges and painted those parts of the skeleton that would be mating together. I then hand-riveted the front of ribs 1 and 4 which had to be accomplished from the inside of the skeleton since their rivet holes are hidden by main spar braces. Once accomplished, I re-assembled the rest of the skeleton in preparation for riveting tomorrow.
