Throughout the week, I'd drop by the hanger to trial fit the passenger stick modified with a spike (to break through the canopy in the unlikely event...). Had to turn off quite a bit more as well as a sliver of the stick as thick as the flange on the spike before it fit. Back to the home shop one more time to cross-drill and fabricate a "rivet" from dead soft brass.
I fired up Karl's forge and heated the thing up to cherry red with the spike upwards, open end resting on the firebrick. I had his magnetic parts bowl turned upside down, but the part was so small I couldn't tell if it was only the tongs that were still magnetic. I knew the open end was cooler than the tip, so I plunged it into the pre-warmed oil anyway. The file didn't skip off the flange, so I decided to try to heat it again. This time, the part rested on it's side, and glowing brightly everywhere. Fumbled a bit getting the tongs to grip it and forgot to check the magnetism before quench.
A file test on the flange was...hard-ish? I wasn't confident trying to file the beautiful spikey tip. So I put the part in a 450 F oven to bake for 1 hour. Hard enough to crack plexiglass, I'm pretty sure.
After chucking the part in the lathe to polish off the carbonized oil, it still slipped in the end of the stick nicely. Inserted the a 1/8" dia brass rod and peened the ends, then filed and sanded until the brass, staked into the countersinks on both sides, was flush with the steel.
