Brief Description:  Left tank: install floating nutplates (part II)

Squoze the "-1" rivets into all existing, standard nutplate spacing holes. The short shanks were just long enough to expand the rivet to fill in the hole, leaving the surface close to flush on the backside. (Image 1).

Filling in the holes simply makes for a level surface on which to drill the holes for the mini-nutplates. Although they could work loose over time, they are held in place by the overlapping rivets that hold on the nutplates, and once on the wing the spar web holes the "fill" rivets in place too.

I used the home-made template (see Image 2) and one of the 1/64 oversize bolts to locate it while drilling the holes. Clamped the template to drill the first hole, then inserted a -6 rivet to be better assured of 3 colinear holes, reclamped, and drilled the second hole.

The holes were csk for AN426-3-3.5 rivets. Inserted two rivets, put the nutplate on them and held it to the backside, and put in the bolt to snug things up tight. A steel fender washer, the template, then another fender washer took up the grip of the bolt. The washer on the factory heads of the rivets bore the brunt of the press when I squoze the tails. The fender washer on top was marred buy the squeezer, as the rivets usually set at a funky angle. The bucktails are perfectly adequate for holding the nutplates and preventing rotation when the bolts go in (and out).

Image 3 shows the peculiar double rivet pattern on the z-bracket, and installed nutplates underneath,

Did the same thing for the three nutplates that are installed in the left wing spar web for the inboard z-bracket, backriveted the "fill" rivets and the mini-nutplate rivets. All set to try fitting the tanl tomorrow!
