Brief Description:  FIRST ENGINE START! (part I)

Part 1 of 3
Pulled E-mag fuses, attached charger to top-up battery after flap replacement last week. (Per manual, E-mag's don't like charger waveforms.) Installed spinner. Master on, Dynon booted, boost on with purge valve closed sent gas to the spider for the first time. With mixture full rich and throttle open, noted positive fuel flow. Shut down. Karl and I looked over the engine and "nosed" around for avgas smell. All good. Put a shot of STA-BIL fogging oil into top spark plug hole each cylinder. Torqued each plug and attached ignition wires.

Pulled 8PK out onto alley centerline, chained her to my truck with 10' CHP-approved tow chain on the tail tie-down ring, pulled her forward to tauten the chain, and chocked all the wheels. Both upper and lower cowls were off. I removed the cowling hinge pins "stored" on the fuselage--don't want them rattling loose into the propwash!

Executed "priming" procedure with Master on BAT and Dynon booted: Boost-ON, Throttle-FULL, Mixture-FULL RICH, Fuel Flow-OBSERVE 3-5 s, Throttle-CLOSE, Mixture-ICO. Then Throttle-1/4 OPEN, EMags-BOTH ON, Starter-ENGAGE. Cranked 5 sec: nothing. Cranked 10 sec: nothing. Noticed fuel valve was OFF! [Strike One.]

Re-executed "priming" sequence with Fuel-RIGHT, then Boost-ON etc. Cranked 10 sec: still nothing, and it seemed like starter motor was starting to ask for more current than the battery could deliver. Karl noticed fuel dripping from bottom of air filter box. Dang, had I flooded it? Pulled the purge valve open to relieve residual fuel pressure, and waited awhile before trying again.

Went to close the purge valve--sonofagun, I had pulled open the Alternate Air! [Strike Two.] It's right next to the purge valve: I'll put some sort of guard on that knob to better distinguish it. Should hardly ever be activated between annuals.
