Brief Description:  Nose gear mod (part I)

Finished the nose gear modifications: a) staked the "mushrooms" to the fork; b) turned the stnlss spacer to length to allow full torque on the axle bolt with just enough preload for the wheel to turn on the bearings (rather than the the bearings turning with the wheel on the Al mushrooms).

I jacked up the nosewheel with a ratcheting strap through the rear tiedown eyebolt. There's a wood rack secured to the wall back there giving a firm anchor point. Took off the wheel and nose fork, then Karl belayed the back end when I released the ratchet to lower the bare nose gear gently to a 2x4 to rest on.

The stakes are shown in images 1 and 2. Following the design of Grove's RV-series nose wheels, a 1/8" thru hole was drilled 3/4" above the axle bolt hole center. The edge distance looks iffy, but the load imparted by the rolling wheel through the mushroom to the roll pins bears into the bulk of the fork material. I assembled the wheel and continued drilling the mushrooms about 3/4" deep. The bit just slightly broke through the outer edge of the mushrooms. I filed, sanded, and Scotch-Brited until a more-or-less U-shaped groove was formed that the roll pins would slip into.

OSH Aircraft Supply was out of 3/4" long 1/8" dia. roll pins, so I got 1' long pins. The excess that is proud of the outside of the forks was ground off flush later. Image 3 is the spacer that goes between the mushrooms,,,.
