Brief Description:  Vertical Stabilizer

I reassembled the VS and found that the nose of the VS-1013 rib still made a smal dent in the skn - the VS-1005 and VS-1006 were fine, so I decided to rework the VS-1013. The goal was to slightly reduce the high-points where the rib was pressing the skin outward. To do this, I first measured from the forward rivet hole to the high point on the skin, and then translated this to the nose rib. This marked exactly where the rib was pressing the VS skin outward, and so where I needed to concentrate my efforts.

I also found that the dents in the VS skin were permanent. I reduced the dents by working the VS skin between a bucking bar and the back-riveting plate will a mallet (light taps). The initial effort in this regard was not encouraging because it just seemed to make matters worse. However, with a bit of persistence and gentle pursuation I now have the dents reduced (but not eliminated) and the VS skin is acceptably flat. A little sanding and buffing prior to paint should produce an entirely acceptable finish.

Finnished dimpling the VS skin, ribs and front and rear VS spars, and counter-sunk the rear VS spar. Finish-drilled the #12 holes in the rudder hinge brackets and deburred all of the holes.
Section 6-3 is done.
