Brief Description:  canopy latch install

Spent 4 hours or more on this latch. I must say it would have been easier to do with out the windscreen in place because I had to get in the plane and close the canopy so that I could check fit and mark for adjustment. Took awhile to do the trimming process this way but I slowly worked the cuts and filing of the latch lever until it fit snug but not too tigh

Once the latch was fitting, I fit the handle. Marked center line and estimated position for attach screw. Center punched and drilled 1/8 drill thru the handle. Replaced handle on to latch handle with canopy closed and locked and match drilled thru the handle tube.

Increased the the hole in handle to 3/16 so screw will just slide in to the tube and also countersunk.

I then taped to 8-32 on aft wall of tube and back into the handle

I then worked the handle edhes on scotch brite wheel to get the back side rounded real good so that it wouldnt hit the skirt when rotated. I also sanded on the latch lever to remove all the nicks and to make nice looking while I decide If I want to paint it or not.

Drilled the two holes for the spring that keeps latch pulled back when releasing the latch handle. One is drilled into the latch handle flanfe and the othe into the latch lever.

I also sanded down a nylon spacer to fit between the skirt and the back of the handle. I was going to use the stainless steel spacer purchased awhile back but Ill try this nylon job and if it works ok, Ill trace out and cout the stainless one later.

I didnt think Id spend most of my day on this but its the second try and I didnt want a third redo effort. The fit is good and im happy with it so far. Hopefully I can start on seat belt install tomorrow.
