Brief Description:  Engine oil fittings

Now that I have the steel fittings that I need for the fuel and oil lines, it seemed like a good idea to start attaching those. Pipe fittings—especially those that are 45 or 90 degree elbows—can sometimes present a challenge to get tightened and clocked in the correct orientation. This is compounded by having the engine already hung, the engine mount in the way, and very limited access to the fitting due to interference with other components. Such was the case with the 45 degree elbow that the oil pressure line attaches to.

The brief instructions included with the firewall forward kit mentioned two different options for attaching the fitting—one on the side, and the other on the aft part of the accessory case. The plans mention the aft orifice being preferred due to limited access to the side with the engine already installed. One thing that has been slightly challenging is that the engine was painted gray after all of the plugs were installed, so there is a bit of searching and verifying required before being certain that the plug about to be removed is the plug I need. Once I was sure I had the correct one, I pulled out the hex wrenches and removed the plug.

There isn’t enough space to write about the challenge getting the fitting installed, but I ended up removing the accessory drive box and using a crow’s foot extension on the ratchet to get the fitting on. The instructions call for using Permatex #2, so once I was sure I could make it all fit, I cleaned the parts, applied some Permatex, and tightened everything down. Then I moved on to the larger fittings that run to/from the oil cooler. The return line is a simple pipe to flare union, but the supply line is a 45 degree fitting deep behind the engine. When I looked back there I was surprised to find that the fine folks at Lycoming had already installed one…could I really be that lucky?
