Brief Description:  Engine installation

Tom met me at the hangar this morning to hang the engine. After a quick study of the plans to verify the orientation of the mounts, we hoisted the engine and got underway. The quirks of the Dynafocal mount are well documented elsewhere, but for those that aren't familiar with this particular apparatus, it bears a quick explanation.

The mount uses four bolts, each going through a series of large rubber grommets, and then through the engine case, to hold the engine in position. The challenge for installation is that the bolts are angled inward significantly. So much in fact that putting one bolt in can make it almost impossible to get the next one in. The trick is to get the top two in first, and then lower the engine slightly to allow the weight to help line up the lower holes. This worked for number three, but the fourth wasn't cooperating. Tom figured that if we could lift the back of the engine a bit, we could possibly coax it into place. Remember, this is a 300 lb assembly of steel.

We finally figured that we could use a sawhorse and place a jack under the aft case to give us the needed lift. Worked like a champ...the bolt slid in place and we tightened everything down. Out with the spark plugs and replaced the top four with dehydrator plugs and the job was finished. I'm very stoked!!
