Brief Description:  Oil fittings & sensor wiring

In my previous post, I had mentioned the use of an unsuitable sealant on a couple of oil fittings, so today I bit the bullet and removed both fittings to clean the RTV and replace with some Permatex #2. I knew that the big fitting for the line running from the engine to the oil cooler would be pretty easy since access was unrestricted, but the fitting for the oil pressure line was going to be more challenging. Once the fitting was off, the RTV on the oil cooler line simply rolled off like an o-ring, a sure sign that it wouldn’t have sealed properly, so I cleaned the fitting and the opening on the engine case and put some sealant on the threads. While that was curing a bit, I removed the accessory case drive to gain access to the 45 deg fitting and removed that with a crow’s foot on a ratchet extension. Once that was off, I cleaned it up, applied some sealant and reinstalled both fittings. Finally, I tightened all of the oil, fuel and manifold pressure lines and added some torque seal to each.

After that was done, I started on the process of securing the EGT and CHT probe leads. Two primary considerations with this—first, everything must be supported, and second, everything must be routed clear of the exhaust pipes. I’ve been thinking about this particular task for quite awhile, but until I sat and stared at it, I couldn’t come up with a decent solution. What I eventually did was add a metal tang to each lower valve cover to allow me to put Adel clamps below the magneto clamps. Once those were installed, I could then methodically measure each line, trim appropriately, add the terminal fittings and then secure. I only got the left side done, but I had to fire up the G3X to see the temperature displays…pretty cool!
