Brief Description:  Probes and exhaust installation

Although I haven’t logged much time in the last couple of weeks, I have been busy planning and organizing in order to get the remaining work prioritized so that my build time is as productive as possible. I still have quite a few things that I need to order—mostly wiring, connectors, switches & circuit breakers, etc—so I’m trying to make sure I know what I still need and order it in the fewest number of shipments possible.

Today’s first order of business was cylinder head temp probes. This had to be one of the simplest tasks on the engine—put a little anti-seize compound on the threads, screw in finger tight, and then tighten to 25 inch lbs. With that done, I decided that I was going to take a look at the exhaust and see what I could accomplish there. Due to the extreme heat, the exhaust is a “work around” sub-system—meaning everything like fluid lines, wires, hoses, etc—must be worked around it to ensure that nothing comes in contact with a pipe. Until the exhaust goes in, there is a lot of guessing about clearances, so I figured it was time to install it. The process was pretty straightforward as the system is designed specifically for this engine/airframe combination. I still need to get a 12” extension to gain access to a couple of the aft nuts, but since I’ll have to take it off at least once more, I decided not to torque anything today.

The final project was installing the exhaust gas temp probes. These require drilling a #30 hole in each tube, between 2” and 4” from the flange, so I measured each one (I went with 2”) and used a punch to set a dimple in the proper location. After drilling each to #35 and then enlarging to #30, I trimmed the clamps down to size and installed each probe. Off to Oshkosh tomorrow!
