Brief Description:  Prop governor installation

My focus for the day was to start working on installing the prop governor and attaching the cable. As I mentioned in my previous post, the governor cable sweeps around from right to left, through the firewall, and back right to an attach bracket that is affixed on the back of the governor. Due to the fact that the cable is a finite length, there are a couple of ways to control where the attach point ends, the first being where it penetrates the firewall (already set), and then where the control arm is clocked. The final adjustment is one of fractions of an inch and is based on how far the control rod bearing is threaded onto the shaft. All of this would come into play.

To start this, I had to cut the safety wire that had been done at the MT factory. I never like cutting safety wire as it is usually there for a reason, but in this case, I had no choice. After loosening the six screws on the back of the governor, I was able to rotate the control arm to approximately the correct position, and then removed three of the screws to install the bracket. Once I was fairly sure of the adjustment, I tightened all of the screws and started to safety wire it all back together. Although I ended up redoing a couple of wires, I was pretty pleased with the result—I’m getting better at one thing at least.

Back to the engine, weave the governor through the engine mount arms, around the battery case, past the oil lines and onto the attach pad. Since my normal (and very accurate) torque wrench would be useless in this location, I got out my reserve torque wrench (break away versus gauge) and torqued the four bolts. I figured that it was better that I have a reasonable measure of torque rather than using the “good and tight” method. Bolt installation to follow, but I can already see one challenge.
