Brief Description:  Baffle and inlet ramp

The air induction system on the IO-360 continues to confound me a bit. The baffles, inlet ramps and air induction snorkel all meet at one key (and very visible) place, and therefore must be carefully fabricated and fitted. Adding to the challenge is the fact that the “plans” for the snorkel attachment are more like “ideas” and leave much to the builder’s discretion. I imagine a conversation like this at Van’s one day: “Hey Brodsky, did you get those plans drawn for the VA-132-1 installation yet?” “Huh? I thought those weren’t due for another couple of weeks…when’s the first shipment?” “Truck leaves this afternoon…” “Uh…I’ll have ‘em done by lunchtime…” The picture tells the rest of the story.

With all that, I actually made pretty good progress today. I started with the replacement VA-132-1B bracket that attaches the aft portion of the snorkel to the inlet ramp. After messing around with it for awhile, I figured out that it wasn’t going to work at all as I was going to need to trim the fiberglass on the snorkel in such a way that it would leave about a ¼” gap. In the end, I scrapped the new bracket and fabricated one of my own out of .032” stock. I also remade a new VA-132-1A bracket out of the old -1B since I had to adjust the fit to the new ramp…sort of a circle of life thing.

After finally deciding that I was as close as I was ever going to be on the snorkel to ramp fit, I marked and trimmed the inlet ramp to accept the air filter. Lots of cutting, snipping, grinding and filing later, the ramp went on for a test fit. So far, so good. After ensuring that everything was attached in a suitable manner, I installed the lower cowl and began the process of figuring out the ramp to baffle connection. The rest of that story will have to wait for another day.
