Brief Description:  Starter power cable

I started today by trying to get the main power cable secure from the starter solenoid to the starter. Most of the work had been done, but there was one area where the cable passes the engine mount that looked like a source for rubbing. It seemed easy enough to add a couple of Adel clamps at that location, but I’ve learned that nothing is easy about Adel clamps—especially when attaching two of them together.

It was a bit of a comedy of errors. Adel clamps are notorious for popping loose just at the moment that you think the nut is threaded. The spring tension in the clamp tends to send the nut and washer flying across the hangar, while the clamps themselves come loose and dangle uselessly. This is not fun.

I ended up using cable ties to hold the respective clamps together, and then using the screw threads, pulling the assembly tight enough to get the washer on and the nut started. Three tries for this particular pair of clamps.

Once I had that done, I went ahead and attached the silicone boot on each end. I’m not terribly happy with the boot on the starter as it really needs to be a straight connection since the cable doesn’t turn—the connector is bent 90 degrees to fit. I modified one of the existing boots, but the results were less than stellar…maybe Aircraft Spruce sells something.
