Brief Description:  Cowl fitting and SafeAir bracket installation

A quick run out to the hangar to finish up some basic cowl fitting and make as much forward progress as I could. The cowl, like the canopy, isn't going to be finished until much further along in the project, but without a basic idea of how everything goes together, I can't do much more "under the hood". With that, I set out to measure and drill for the MilSpec fasteners that run along the sides of the cowling. I ran into a little bit of a challenge with the right side, as it hung over by about 1/16", but I just compensated in my measurement and drilled accordingly. I will sand that part to fit as I go along. By the time I finished with that, I had 46 holes drilled that would eventually take a fastener...at that point I figured that I'd better count to see how many I actually have. 52...phew...

With about an hour left before I had to leave, I started the process of attaching the SafeAir firewall penetration brackets. The idea with these is to have a fireproof (or at least fire resistant) way of passing the wire bundles through the firewall to allow power to the aircraft and various engine sensors to provide data to the avionics. Since the mantra is "steel from the firewall forward", the SafeAir system provides a method of firesleeving the wires and protecting the interior cabin from flames and fumes.

The process is pretty straightforward--and the photos show the progress. Simply find a spot that is out of the way of everything else, cut a 1 1/8" hole in the firewall in two spots--one for power wires, the other for sensor wires, and then use the backing plate as a drill guide to drill the screw holes. Repeat on both sides and done. During the next session I will attach the firesleeve and start running wires through.
