Brief Description:  Windshield & canopy fairing work

A short session devoted to finish sanding today. The two coats of epoxy from yesterday required sanding with 100 grit to knock off all of the gloss before finishing with 180 grit. The initial sanding went rather slowly due to the fact that the raw epoxy was so slick that even a little buildup of sanded resin would tend to make the paper slide rather than sand. Once the gloss started to wear down the process went much more quickly. After about two hours I had almost all of the gloss removed and went back to hit everything with 180 grit to smooth out the scratches. At this point everything was looking pretty good, but I found one low area on the right side that I went back and filled with a little more Bondo. After letting that cure, I sanded it down and applied a thin coat of epoxy over the area, as well as a couple of places where I had sanded back into the glass weave.

I had reached a point where it was really time to start removing the first layer of electrical tape in order to get a better idea of what needed to be sanded a bit more before priming. There were a couple of places where the tape started to tear because I hadn’t sanded through the resin to the tape, but careful attention with a small sanding block took care of that. I ended up removing both layers of tape along the top, and will have to go back and put a layer on before detail sanding, but overall the edge looks really good and I think it’s going to come out really nice.
