Brief Description:  Side skirt fabrication

In a previous post I mentioned that by raising the canopy front by ¼” I had caused a gap of about half of that at the front of both canopy side skirts. Fitting a sliding canopy requires a pretty specific order of construction, and the builder’s manual, while actually pretty thorough, lacks the “but first” statement that prevents the builder from making things out of sequence. In my case, I had trimmed the forward part of the skirt per the plans, but later realized that this should actually be one of the last steps…and they should be trimmed to the fuselage, not exactly per the plans.

Fortunately I had purchased a 2’ x 4’ sheet of .032 alclad to remake the rear skirts, and there was just enough there to also make two new side skirts as well. Nothing remarkable with the process…cut, trim, deburr and match drill to the old skirts, leaving plenty of extra in the problem area for trimming later.
