Brief Description:  Canopy finish work

Today was a work session that started with no clear plan, and ended with a lot accomplished, but not much to show for it. With the engine still on a truck somewhere, the avionics delayed by a month due to unknown issues, it is time to get some of the misc stuff done that has been hanging over my head for the last couple of months. So back to the canopy.

One of the goals was to start the final process of fitting the plexi within the frame and attaching everything permanently. I've done this long enough to know that "permanent" means "drill out rivets" when I realize that I have forgotten something, so I started by doing something completely different. I made a new latch hook. The latch hook that came with the kit was ok, but during the trimming phase, I felt like I had trimmed too much and the canopy wasn't latching firmly. I could have ordered another from Van's for about 13 bucks, but add shipping and I'm pushing the limit on what I'm willing to pay for something that I can make myself.

I had a leftover piece of angle that was used for the firewall/engine mount, and it was just big enough to work. Also, it was almost twice as thick as the original, so if a little is good, more is better...right? Mark, rough cut, file, test, file, test...and so on. Although the picture shows the middle stage, where it still looks pretty rough, the final product came out pretty good and after numerous trips back and forth from the canopy to the vise, that little chore was done.
