Brief Description:  Misc fiberglass work

Fiberglass sanding is not fun work. Since it was a nice morning I set up outside of the hangar on the concrete and began sanding using a combination of 80 grit for the really stubborn areas, 120 across the entire surface, followed by a light sanding with 180 grit to remove the majority of the sanding marks. This entire process consumed most of three hours, at the end of which I had a lot of dust, itchy arms, and two cowling pieces that looked exactly like they had when I started out—albeit much smoother and with far less voids than in the beginning. After blowing all of the surfaces with high pressure air, I cleaned them thoroughly with mineral spirits and then set up the booth to spray with a high build primer. The purpose of the primer is two-fold—first, it will fill some of the more minor voids, but more importantly, after giving it a light sanding, the dark, uniform color will highlight the areas that need additional filling. After applying two coats of primer I left it there to cure for at least a day before I come back to sand.

Turning back to the wingtip, I installed the right nav light using the same techniques described previously, and after testing the light, temporarily installed the wingtip. I still need to fit the light cover on the right side, and also install the aft rib in both wingtips, but this process is close to being done. The focus on the next session will be fitting the inlet ramps in the upper cowling, and then I will install the camlocks to allow me to attach the cowlings for final trimming, installation of the oil door, and application of the heat tape on the lower surfaces.
