Brief Description:  Forward fuselage prep

This is the part of homebuilding that Jen says "I don't get"...after all the hours of assembling, fitting, drilling, and fabricating, you take the whole thing apart. Since everything still has to be deburred, edges worked, countersunk or dimpled, sanded, and primed, the disassembly has begun. I decided to make a checklist to ensure I did everything in a logical order, and to keep this from turning into deburring hell, I also decided to completely finish each piece as I disassembled it. I started back in the baggage compartment and began with the ribs, working up to the lower longerons and finishing with the gear attach webs. At each step I consulted the plans to make sure I was countersinking or dimpling only where necessary--there are many parts of the aircraft in this area that use AD470 rivets, so I don't want to be cutting or dimpling if it is not required.

I made use of the long 1/8" drill bit to drill the center floor stiffeners, and as the photos show, a 1 1/2 inch hole saw to cut the pass-through holes in the F-7101s. The holes through the skins are 1", but there is a 1/8" gap between the skin and the F-7107, so I decided to go with a slightly larger hole to accomodate the rubber grommet that will be inserted in the skin. Lots left to do but I have a number of parts that could be primed on the next warm day. Of course, this is Kansas...in January...I can always hope.
