Brief Description:  Forward fuselage preparation

A long but very productive day. I started by figuring out the issue with the left side F-713 auxiliary longeron. It turns out that a corner of the F-713 was coming in contact with the F-717 lower longeron. A couple minutes filing and the pieces fit perfectly. After that I fit the F-7101 gear attach web on both sides. This is a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum that fills up the space between the F-713, F-717, F-704, and F-902. The purpose of the F7101 is to strengthen the area of the fuselage side where the gear attach points are. The piece doesn't come pre-punched--I assume because it is so thick, so once clamped in place there is a lot of drilling to do. After I finished drilling all around the F-7101s, I finished drilling the auxiliary longerons and then moved on to some part fabrication.

At this point in the process there is a lot of cutting, filing, aligning, drilling, clecoing, checking, and drilling some more. There are a host of spacers, gussets, and other things that must be fitted and drilled in place...lots of aluminum on the floor. After several hours of this, the F-796Bs (attach points for the forward part of the fuel tanks) were in place and ready to go.

The last thing I did was to fit the forward fuselage floor stiffeners in place and drilled them out. Anna came out and helped get the outer two in position. Since you have to mark a centerline and position from underneath you really need a helper here. I suspect I'll need a lot of additional help as I go forward since most parts of the fuselage will take two people to rivet. The plans call for rudder pedal fabrication next since the fuselage is still open and everything is accessible.
