Brief Description:  Completed F-704 Center Section

Started today's session by attaching nut plates on all components. Each part of the center section has nut plates along the top edge, and the forward section has four cover attach points that each have several. Along the way, I ended up trying something I read about a long time ago...namely, dimpling the nut plates where they attach to thinner sections of sheet metal (areas too thin to countersinking). When I first read about this, I was well along in the project and elected to not go back and redo all of the work I'd done to date, but I have to admit, they fit much better...I did have to grind one side of a 3/32" dimple die, but it really works much better. Lesson learned.

After attaching all of the nut plates, I riveted the cover attach brackets in place, and then made the spacers out of 3/8" aluminum tubing. The plans are very specific regarding the length (1 7/16") because this is where the wing spar inserts and the space must be exactly right. That whole process took awhile.

Finally, I fired up the compressor and riveted all four of the corner pieces in place. These pieces form the vertical structure that rises out of the center section. All in all, a very stout assembly. Next comes the aft section.
