Brief Description:  Firewall prep

Today I finished up the firewall prep by dimpling the stainless steel firewall, then countersinking all of the various parts that attach to it. By this time in the project, it seems I spend a lot less time reading the plans, and a lot more time just working. Case in point--I was not happy with the first several countersinks in the aux fuel pump attach bracket, so I just made another out of a piece of .063 aluminum. With the bandsaw and drill press, this took only about 5 minutes. I guess by now you shouldn't have to read the instructions for dimpling, countersinking, and priming.

After countersinking everything, I went over the parts with a ScotchBrite pad to roughen them up, then washed them, and finally went over everything with lacquer thinner. Then I tried out some new primer (well, new to me) that I picked up at a local auto parts store. The primer is a Mar Hyde self-etching primer and it seems like something I could grow to like. At $11 a can, it's not cheap, but the Dupont VariPrime that I've been using is about $100 a gallon...so, I'm thinking of at least using it up on the interior parts of the fuselage--then using the Mar Hyde on the visible parts within the cockpit area. I really like the low-sheen gray for the visible areas.
