Brief Description:  Firewall sealing, fuel lines & electrical

Today involved jumping around to a number of different projects—from painting covers to sealing the firewall—but it was another one of those days where it felt like I was going backwards at times. The primary goal for the session was to seal the firewall, a task that I had been putting off for some time. The actual firewall doesn’t need to be sealed, but there are several places that have pretty significant holes—especially around the center recess where the metal is joined and along the top and lower corners where it curves to match the fuselage. I had purchased a silicone-based fire block caulk a couple of years ago and elected to use a couple of different methods for application, to include a small syringe and the always popular Ziplock bag.

There are no pictures to document the process, and about halfway through I was ready to quit. Access was extremely limited, application was messy, and the final results left me somewhat disappointed, but I think I got most of it done. The biggest challenge was trying to get a decent bead of caulk in places where I could barely reach. Since the primary goal of this is to seal the firewall from smoke and fumes, I think it will work fine, but it will get no prizes for pretty. In hindsight, this would have been a good job to finish before the top skin went on.

I finished up the day by torquing the fuel lines up to the fuel selector, tidying up the wires along the forward spar, and then painting the tunnel covers and fuel pump dog house before heading for the house.
