Brief Description:  ELT antenna and aft fuselage riveting

A long session with lots accomplished today! I started by figuring out a location for the ELT—on the upper aft fuselage, about a foot behind the GTN 625 antenna. Although some builders mount this antenna inside the aft fuselage, the manufacturer’s instructions are pretty clear…”on a metal aircraft, the antenna should be installed on the upper exterior of the aircraft”. I have to admit that while it does tend to clutter the exterior up a bit; I do think it makes sense that a device that is solely intended for emergency use should be installed per the manufacturer’s guidance. With that, I fabricated a doubler, primed and riveted it in place, and then secured the cable that runs between the ELT and antenna.

At that point I did some vacuuming and cleaning inside the aft fuselage and then began the process of closing it all up. I started by reattaching the baggage floors, and then attached the TNC and BNC connectors for the GTN 625 and GDL 39. With that complete, it was time to do some riveting. Ross has volunteered to come out next weekend and shoot some rivets, but there was easy access to the upper stiffeners that run the length of the aft fuselage, so I went ahead and set all of those. Then I moved forward and got all of the rivets that attach the skin to the aft baggage bulkhead. No turning back now…
