Brief Description:  Forward fuselage closeout planning

Today was a short session dedicated to figuring out the riveting sequence and other details for attaching the top skin. One of those details included finding a way to remove the GMA 240 tray for riveting access if necessary. The biggest challenge is that with the GMA 240 rack installed, there is only a small (about 1 ½”) gap between the top of the rack and the rib—and no way to reach around the rack with a bucking bar when the skin is installed. Two options that I came up with included starting the riveting sequence with the center rib in much the same way that the wing skins were riveted…or, removing the GMA 240 rack, riveting the skin, and then reinstalling the rack.

With option #1, I would rivet the center rib by raising the skin and getting my arm in place with a bucking bar while my riveting assistant shoots the rivets. Once the center rib is done, we could move outward and get the outboard ribs while still outside of the fuselage—it would be a tight squeeze with my arm, but I think it’s doable. With the outboard ribs riveted, I would then have to climb inside to finish the skin-to-longeron rivets. If it works, I definitely prefer this option.

Option #2, removing the rack, is my backup plan. The biggest issue with removing the rack is that there is a backshell grounding wire that would be impossible to attach/detach once the skin is in place. With a little bit of study, I have a sequence (shown in the pictures) that should allow me to remove the racks for future servicing if necessary.
