Brief Description:  Subpanel riveting

The last step of the subpanel installation was to rivet the center section in place. Six rivets along the front on each side, and three each on the flanges between panels. Since these panels are a bit flimsy by themselves, it was important to make sure that the rivets would fit without too much trouble before I actually set them—I’ve seen the sheet metal distort enough that it was impossible to get rivets in, even when it was held in place with clecos.

Once I was sure that everything fit properly, I set most of the rivets with my rivet gun, and the rest I squeezed with the hand squeezer. I’m always amazed at how riveting really makes the structure solid. With that done, I decided to install a bracket to hold the center cutout in the proper position to receive the top skin—and to help strengthen the area where it had been cut.

Fabrication and installation required that the skin be in place to ensure proper placement of the bracket, but the process was straightforward and after priming and riveting, that job was done.
