Brief Description:  Cabin tunnel covers

Back out to the hangar for the first time in a couple of weeks due to family commitments. I was hopeful that I could get the center tunnel covers finished so that I could move on to begin wiring, but still faced the challenge of how to close the gap in the cover where I had trimmed it to clear the fuel line. I had previously thought of a plan to put a pencil holder on the side of the cover—and if done properly, it would extend out just enough to cover the gap. Functional on two fronts…my kind of fix. The challenge was how to make it.

I had made a couple of trial patterns with cardboard, and taking the one that fit the best, I used it to mark a piece of .025” alclad sheet to start the process. The first attempt was a little bit too narrow to work, but the second try held some promise. In order to not have pencils and pens falling down through the cover, I made a “floor” from the same stock, and after a lot of trimming and adjusting, I riveted it in place. It worked…and actually looks intentional. I was relieved that I wasn’t going to have to start bending tubing again.

With the aft cover done, I started working on the front portion which required a bit of adjustment to get fitted. I’m still not sure where I want to add nutplates, but I will certainly need this cover to be removable, so I’ll have to figure that part out next session.
